Update October 2022: Guy’s rOCD app does not seem to be live anymore. However, he has co-created this OCD app called GGOC: https://ocd.app/

In episode 27 of The OCD Stories podcast I interviewed Dr Guy Doron. I first interviewed Guy in January for episode 5. Guy is one of the leading researchers in relationship OCD (rOCD), and along with his team he his uncovering important information about this subtype of OCD. He has recently co-created an app for ROCD recovery. (links to download it below). This episode offers general OCD advice, so don’t worry if you don’t suffer with ROCD. OCD is OCD.

ROCD researcher Guy Doron

In this episode Guy explains the how the belief in change is important to achieve change, if we associate self with positive statements we adopt them, and seeking other potential alternative partners even only for comparison may make ROCD worse. We discuss what suffers have in common, relationship OCD beyond romantic, relationships including relationships to parents and God. He shares some great advice for life – letting experiences come in without too much analysis – to experience and be curious. Enjoy!

  1. Hi Stu. I have been listening to your blogs and also to your course on ROCD. I have been married nearly 21 years and have suffered with this on and off. ROCD started the minute I spoke to him to say I felt like I wanted to marry him. When OCD free things are really good. I have had a wonderful marriage and feel quite proud that been married for so long despite of OCD. When bad it’s terrible. I want to run away as the anxiety of it all gets too much. Continuous checking my feelings and come out with nothing so have the intrusive thought I don’t love him and because can’t find the certainty feeling in my heart so the cycle begins big time. I am aware when well I do this I just don’t buy into it. I am trying your acceptance script which makes loads of sense. I just wondered how did you stop the checking which I seem to do automatically as that drives it more. Also do you know of a ROCD therapist here in the Uk? Thanks

Hi, thanks for your comment. My best advice is find a CBT therapist as they will be able to help you overcome this much quicker. If you want to go privately I recommend calling OCD Action or OCD UK for their recommendations. If not go via your GP as the NHS has many good CBT therapists. The key is not to look for an rOCD therapist but instead find a CBT therapist that treats OCD. The main reason is because it’s all OCD, what helps one theme helps them all. I also recommend reading books like “the mindfulness workbook for OCD”. Hope that helps!

  3. And how to stop the checking and waiting for the feeling that I love him? The acceptance bit?
